P7 pupils learn how to ‘Bee Safe’

Organised by Newtownabbey PSNI’s Neighbourhood Policing Team, Bee Safe is an interactive learning experience which uses role play and real life scenarios to teach 11-year-olds how to keep themselves safe and other issues of general social awareness.

Police, along with the Fire and Rescue Service, Women’s Aid, Northern Ireland Electricity, DRD Road Safety, Newtownabbey Borough Council’s environmental health staff and Translink, instructed pupils on a wide range of safety issues throughout the week.

The funding for the event was provided by Newtownabbey Community Safety Partnership, and the transport supplied by Translink, thanks to financial support from Newtownabbey Council’s environmental health department.

PSNI Area Commander, Chief Inspector Stephen Reid commented: “Our intention is to enlighten children to the dangers around them and teach them not only to protect themselves, but also to keep their friends and family safe.

“Police officers spoke to the children about important choices relating specifically to their safety and behaviour. Our colleagues from the other agencies showed them how to keep safe in the home, with fire, electricity, on the roads and on buses.

“Our thanks once again go to Newtownabbey Borough Council’s environmental health department and the Policing and Community Safety Partnership for their support and supplying the facilities and venue for the event.”
