AS I am a lifelong SDLP activist, I took great exception to the letter from Lisburn UUP branch chairman, Mr Mitchell.

Mr Mitchell appears to have been smitten with his new leader’s ‘condescending arrogance’, being so detatched from reality, as he stated, “should the UUP, as other parties have done, had a new leader imposed on them?”

I do not recall my party (SDLP) having a leader imposed on us, nor the Alliance Party and in fact Sinn Fein and the DUP. My party and the other parties have either carried out a democratic vote or the leader has been through natural succession.

Mr Mitchell says the branch also acknowledged the talents of the other candidates, yet only two candidates ran for the leadership.

Mr Mitchell’s letter would appear to have been a damage limitation exercise in relationship with Lisburn branch UUP and their elected MLA.
