No answer to Olympic question

AS the originating author of a letter about the Olympic Torch which appeared in the Star a few weeks ago and which seems to have stirred so much controversy I would like to reply to a letter from Councillor Jennifer Coulter.

One is not surprised that another councillor has come out to support the initial comments by Councillor Beckett who called this a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’.

As for sport related tenders from businesses here it’s certainly not to do with the Olympics as a fact I stated in my last letter is as follows: the official Olympic tickets have been made in the USA and only 9% of the official merchandise has been made in the UK.

I have no doubt the sales, on the night that the Olympic torch passes through our city, of soft drinks, crisps and ice cream will increase but would suggest the profit from the same would not cover the cost of the no doubt free wine and dine session that I expect will be held in the Civic Centre for the privileged few at the ratepayers’ expense of course.

My personal concern and dismay is for the charities, other worthwhile causes and the vulnerable in our society who will get nothing as lottery money is redirected to help finance the London Olympics and for unemployment in Lisburn City which has increased by 7%.

It’s about time Councillors Beckett and Coulter came back down to earth and entered the real world concentrating on your own communities and local people instead of condoning what’s going on in London.

The Councillors need to spare a thought for the real cost to people of NI.

Unemployed (still) Lisburn.
