Be proud of Wallace High says parent

I read with interest the letter complaining that Wallace High School is charging £100 for membership of its sports club.

I have three children at Wallace High School. I have been paying the voluntary contribution requested by the school for each of my children. I understand that this contribution is used to help fund a wide range of extra-curricular activity provided by the school, including the substantial transport costs associated with sports teams. It now transpires that more than 50% of parents have not been making this contribution, leaving me and others to effectively subsidise their children.

I am extremely grateful Wallace High School has taken the brave step to re-structure their charging policy in order to make things fairer. Parents of children involved in extra-curricular sport should contribute in a small way to the cost of providing it. £100 per year (less than £2 per week) is a reasonable amount, especially compared to the cost of belonging to many private sports clubs.

It seems to me that those who are complaining are those who have not been paying the voluntary contribution in the first place. I am nor being asked to pay any more money than I would have paid before (unless I chooses to opt into the I-Pad project).

Wallace High School is a wonderful facility, offering our children fantastic opportunities. I have friends in the North of England who pay £10,000 per child per year for a similar grammar school education. We should be proud of what we have.

A grateful mum
