'˜No plans' for further extension of speed limit

It follows a review by the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) and the PSNI last year, which took in the route between Monkstown Road and the B149 Beltoy Road.

“The review indicated that given the increasing number of residential development and traffic volumes around Greenisland, a revision of the speed limits, which vary between 60mph and 30mph along the B90 at Greenisland, would better reflect the function of the road,” a spokesperson for the Department said. “This matter was subject to public consultation and as a result, a 40mph limit to the west of Greenisland to include the Monkstown Road junction, and an extension of the existing 40mph limit to the east of the village to the existing 30mph limit at Woodburn Road, is due to begin shortly. The revisions will also include the unrestricted section of Trooperslane Road.”

A local father, who lives in The Brambles area, told the Times he was “glad” to see the reduction imposed.

“It’s something I’ve been asking for since 2009, when my kids were getting their school bus to Ballyclare along that road,” he added.

Some social media users suggested the limit should be extended to take in the area between the Monkstown Road and Doagh Road junctions.

However, DfI said there are “no current plans” to do so.
