New waste site will be boost to local economy

Ballymena Council’s new Waste Recycling Centre will also be of ‘tremendous’ economic benefit to the local community, a leading environmentalist has said.

Terry A’Hearn, Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency officially opened the newly upgraded household waste recycling centre at Waveney Road which was created with the help of a Department of the Environment Rethink Waste capital grant of £680,000.

Mr A’Hearn said: “Waste is an extremely valuable resource and we can no longer afford to ignore its value. Significant savings of approximately 25,500 tonnes of additional waste will be diverted from landfill over the next 25 years. This has tremendous environmental and economical benefits to the community.”

The official opening event comes just ahead of Recycle Week which is taking place from June 17. This year the materials highlighted for people across the UK to recycle more are packaging, metals, plastics, textiles and food waste. The Waveney Road site serves all 25,000 households in the Council area and is located within a 10-minute travel zone for the majority of householders in the Borough.
