MLA calls for solution to Hillsborough traffic problems

LAGAN Valley MLA Brenda Hale has said that more needs to be done to tackle the traffic problems in Hillsborough Village and is calling on the Roads Minister to find a long-term solution to the ongoing issues.

Mrs Hale made her comments following a car accident in the village on Monday morning (May 14).

She said the local community had been deeply shocked by the accident, which took place outside Downshire Primary School.

“Having spoken with the PSNI and Ambulance staff at the scene on Monday, I am thankful that there were no fatalities,” said Mrs Hale. “I hope that those involved in the accident have a speedy recovery.”

She continued: “Since my election in May 2011, I have constantly lobbied the Roads Minister, Danny Kennedy, on the road traffic issues, that plague Hillsborough village and the surrounding areas.

“I welcome that the Minister has agreed to visit Hillsborough to view the issues for himself and hopefully work towards solutions for the residents in the area.”

Mrs Hale added: “Those living in Hillsborough and the Culcavy Road area have become increasingly frustrated at the inaction of the Department of Regional Development.

“We hope that the Minister will take on board the concerns of the Hillsborough community, who want to see a long-term solution to the outstanding issues, not a quick-fix.

“We need a solution that meets the future needs of the local community, whilst facilitating access to this beautiful Conservation area,” she concluded.
