Members of the local government authority’s Community Planning committee agreed at their latest meeting that the squad’s victory over Greece to reach their first major tournament since the 1986 World Cup in Mexico - and their first European Championship finals - was something to be marked, particularly given the number of players who hail from Mid & East Antrim including Steven Davis from Cullybackey.

Cllr Tommy Nicholl said he was “absolutely thrilled” by the team’s efforts while the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Timothy Gaston told members the mayor had already agreed to put the idea of a reception to full council for consideration.

Cllr Paul Reid commented: “This is one of the things that has not only united this chamber but Northern Ireland. This team has done us all proud.”
