Mayor’s disgust at poppy collection box theft

THE Mayor, Alderman William Leathem, has spoken of his sadness and disgust over the theft of two poppy collection boxes, which were taken from the Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum last Saturday afternoon.

However, following a proposal by the Mayor at Lisburn City Council’s Corporate Services Committee, held on Tuesday, the monies stolen will be reimbursed to the British Legion, which is the intended recipient of the poppy appeal.

Mr Leathem said: “I am appalled and very troubled over the theft of the collection boxes, the proceeds of which were going to the British Legion. It is terribly shocking to think that there are people out there who would stoop so low and steal monies which the public have donated in aid of the Poppy Appeal. If anyone has any information on this theft I urge them to report it to the PSNI. However, I am delighted with the support I have received from my fellow Councillors to make good on the theft of this Poppy Appeal money. I am pleased that we were able to salvage the blow of this theft, in part, and that the British Legion will not lose out over the selfish and uncaring acts of the thief or thieves who stole the collection boxes,” he concluded.
