Lymphoma conference

THe Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF), in association with the Irish Cancer Society, will be hosting an All-Ireland Lymphoma Conference on Saturday, September 11 at the Holiday Inn, Ormeau Avenue, Belfast from 10am to 3pm.

The conference is aimed at cancer patients, their friends and families, carers and health professionals.

Over 1,000 people in Northern Ireland are living with lymphoma and it accounts for 4% of cancers diagnosed here each year. Lymphomas are cancers of the lymphatic system, part of the circulatory system. There are more than 35 known types of Lymphoma. Two of most common types are Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Liz Atkinson, Head of Care Services, UCF said: “We are delighted to be hosting this conference which will give cancer patients and their carers practical information about living with lymphoma. We have a wide range of speakers taking part including Dr Michael Quinn, Consultant Haematologist, Belfast City Hospital who will discuss the body’s immune system; Dr John Marley, Consultant and Senior Lecturer in Oral Health, Royal Victoria Hospital will highlight potential problems with oral health during treatment and Janet Coleman, Health Promotion Consultant at Health Works will give specialist advice on diet and nutrition.

“The conference will also include a personal perspective from lymphoma patient Julia Simpson and Caitlin McCoy, Ward Manager, McDermott Unit, Ulster Hospital will deliver hints and tips for coping with chemotherapy and Rituximab.

“Mavis Duggan, a counselor with UCF will also be highlighting UCF’s Zest for Life, service which can help people who have experienced a cancer diagnosis to identify and implement lifestyle changes which will have a positive impact on their physical and mental health.”

The All-Ireland Lymphoma Conference is free of charge for patients and carers and 20 for health care professionals. Lunch will be provided. There are a limited number of places available and anyone wishing to attend should register with Care Services Secretary, UCF on Tel. 028 9066 3281 by Monday, August 30.
