Landfill application withdrawn by Planners

A planning application for one of the four super dumps planned for Ringsend has been withdrawn.

The application for an ‘inert landfill site’ on the Belraugh Road was withdrawn by Planners last week.

Two local MLA’s have welcomed the news, saying that it’s a much needed boost for the area.

Sinn Fein’s Billy Leonard said: “This community has felt under siege as one operational site was to be added to, by a super-dump for the North West region, a possible Mechanical Biological Treatment Plant and this landfill site on the Belraugh Road.

“Obviously we have to confirm if this is a permanent decision to withdraw by the applicant. More importantly the community will hope it is and there will not be some other type of application coming through.

“I have constantly asked the Minister of Environment Edwin Poots why his Department cannot question the need for so many sites literally within a few miles of each other and have raised a petition in the EU Parliament to that effect.”

DUP MLA Adrian McQuillan also welcomed the move: “This is long overdue.

“The people of this area have been through the mill, the possibility of four landfill sites so close together is ridiculous.”
