Kilwacky Races return to Kilrea

THE Kilwacky Races are back!

Kilrea Community Association will host the popular fundraiser on Saturday, June 26.

The event, which takes place in Coleraine Street, attracted some 2,000 visitors last year, and the committee hope that the event will be even bigger this year.

The soapbox derby will be the main event of the day, starting at 10am. There will also be a craft fair, face painting, bouncy castles and a fancy dress parade.

With 19 entries for last year's races, the committee is hoping that a few more brave residents will take up the challenge this year. Last year's fastest speed was 29mph and the quickest time was 29.84 seconds.

Patricia McQuillan, Secretary of Kilrea Community Association, told The Times: "Last year was the first year of the event, and it proved to be very successful. We have added to it this year, so we hope that everyone comes out to support us.

"The event has been funded by DCAL and is supported by Coleraine Borough Council. It aims to promote good relations in the Kilrea area.

"All the proceeds from the day will go towards the Macmillan Nurses."

The fun kicks off on Friday, June 25 with a Treasure Hunt starting at Kilrea Town Hall at 7pm.
