It’s definitely hair today but gone tomorrow for our Melissa

On June 10 Melissa Hargy from St James’ Park Ballymoney will get her hair cut off in front of all her school mates at Ballymoney High and donate it to the children’s charity to make into wigs.

The 15-year-old is also organising a number of other events to raise money for the charity in memory of her cousin Mark Hargy who sadly passed away on Christmas Day 2003 aged just 15.

Speaking to the Times, Melissa explained: “Even though its coming 12 years since Mark passed away we are always thinking about him. He was the same age as me now when he died and so I just wanted to do something in his memory. I never met Mark, but I often think of him.

“The Little Princess Trust provides real-hair wigs, free of charge, to boys and girls that have sadly lost their own hair through cancer treatment. I just felt this was a fantastic idea and one that I could do and hopefully raise a lot of money for.

“The plan is to do it on Tuesday, June 10 in the Assembly hall during lunchtime. People have been sponsoring me and we will also charge 50p to everyone who wants to come in to watch.

“Mark’s brother, Richard Hargy is a History teacher at our school and I asked him if he would do the cutting.

“I was originally going go get seven inches cut off my hair but I decided as I am blessed with the fact that it will grow back I would just go the whole hog and get it all shaved off!”
