‘It’s a tragedy waiting to happen”

Cllr McShane was speaking at last Monday night’s meeting of Moyle District Council when she stated: “Enough is enough”.

“We were always told that the obstacle was Tesco,” she said referring to the previous application by the supermarket giant to build at the site.

“Then when planning permission was refused, another condition was put on saying that Tesco had six weeks to appeal.

“Now we are being told that it has to wait for planning permission for a housing development. There are always obstacles.

“This is a tragedy waiting to happen, especially for mothers coming round that corner with buggies and prams.

”Roads Service are putting it on the long finger again,” she said.

Cllr Joan Baird supported Cllr McShane saying the situation needed to be “rectified now”.

“It is a hazard and it is especially dangerous for young children going to school in the morning.

“I suspect Roads Service are trying to put the cost onto a developer,” she said.

Cllr Randal McDonnell said it was a “particular trick” of Roads Service “they decide that they can get someone else to do it. Get on with it, THEY are the Roads Service.”

A TransportNI (formerly Roads Service) spokesperson said: “Previously there were planning applications regarding the site in the vicinity of the junction of Ramoan Road/Leyland Road, one of which was the proposed Tesco development. It is our understanding that the Tesco proposals will now not proceed.

“This being the case, it is the intention of TransportNI to take forward a proposal to provide a footway to link the existing provision on Leyland Road to that on Ramoan Road. This will, however, be subject to the successful acquisition of the land and the availability of funding. All such proposals compete for funding and prioritisation along with similar schemes across the whole of Northern Division.”
