HRH - Hoping for Royal Hillsborough

LAGAN Valley MLA Brenda Hale has called on the Westminster Government to support her campaign to grant Royal Status to the village of Hillsborough.

She said Hillsborough has become a permanent home from home for the Royal family when visiting Northern Ireland, as well as providing a residence for the Secretary of State and playing host to ground breaking discussions and political deals over the years.

Throughout its lifetime Hillsborough, as well as hosting the Royal Family, the village has welcomed Presidents and Prime Ministers including Bill Clinton, George W Bush, Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair and David Cameron.

Mrs Hale has been working on a campaign to gain the title of Royal Hillsborough for over a year. Royal status is granted by members of the Royal Family who believe that a village/town has played a leading role in the life of the UK.

“I have been working behind the scenes to put forward a strong case for Hillsborough to be awarded this special status in this the year of Her Majesty the Queen`s Diamond Jubilee celebrations,” explained Mrs Hale. “I also have written to the Secretary of State, Owen Patterson, to ask for his support with this campaign in the hope that a number of leading figures will help strengthen the case.”

She added: “The village of Hillsborough and the local residents have played a major role in the life of the Royal family when coming to visit and I strongly believe that it would be fitting to see the title of ‘Royal Hillsborough’ bestowed on the village.”
