Gilford welcomes torch despite downpour

THE people of Gilford have been congratulated for showing their support for the Olympic torch carriers - despite the almighty downpour in the village last Tuesday.

Sinn Féin MLA John O’Dowd and party colleague Cllr Brendan Curran were among the large crowd who gathered to welcome the torch.

“The people of Gilford and surrounding Districts refused to let the weather stop them participating in this historic event and turned out in their thousands to welcome the Olympic Torch,” said Mr O’Dowd.

“The Olympic Games are the pinnacle of sport and it was an honour for the people of Gilford to have had the privilege of hosting the symbol of those games. Our thanks go to the torchbearers, the event organisers and the staff of Banbridge Council, all of whom played a part in ensuring that Gilford had the opportunity to be a part in this memorable occasion.”

Councillor Curran added his thanks to all those involved in organising the different events within the district.

“Despite the weather the crowds in Gilford were in high spirits as they gathered to see the Olympic torch and they thoroughly enjoyed the day’s events. My personal highlight of the day was witnessing Ballyvarley octogenarian Dan Lennon carry the Torch in the village. Dan was obviously delighted at being given the honour. He was an example for the rest of us and evidence of the health benefits of participating in sport.”
