Funding for historic churches

LARNE Council has been awarded a grant of up to £22,250 to help promote the borough’s “rich and diverse” Christian heritage.

The scheme between the local authority and Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) aims to showcase a number of medieval churches throughout the borough, which the council hopes will attract more tourists to the area. The funding offer was made by the Rural Developments Programme, and the council will contribute a further £10,249 to the project.

Five sites have been selected, including St John’s in Islandmagee, Templecorran in Ballycarry, St Cedma’s in Larne, Glenarm Abbey and St Patrick’s in Cairncastle.

The work involves ongoing maintenance of the sites, erection of tourism signage and vegetation clearance. The funding will enable the development of a Medieval Churches Trail, a website and marketing materials.
