Family’s heartbreak after Craigavon man Alan Haughey dies suddenly in Australia

A Craigavon man’s father has spoken of the family’s heartbreak after his son Alan Haughey, died suddenly in an Australian road crash.

Tributes have been paid to the 28-year-old who died on Sunday afternoon in Western Australia.

The son of Terry and Maureen Haughey, Alan was originally from Drumglass however had recently moved to the Perth area of Australia.

He is survived by his sisters Christine and Nicola and his brother Mark.

The Craigavon man had emigrated to Australia less than a month ago and recently posted about the move, on his Facebook page.

His father Terry described his son as ‘fun-loving’ and revealed how his son had spent the past four years travelling back and forward to Australia and had just secured his residency in August.

Mr Haughey told the Irish News: “We are heartbroken, aboslutely heartbroken. He was a great man, outgoing, fun-loving and just a wonderful son.”

Mr Haughey worked as a mechanic for Murray Engineering which is based in Kalgoorlie, a Western Australian town located 370 miles east of Perth.

His brokenhearted girlfriend, Elaine Ni Meachair posted a photograph of Mr Haughey on her Facebook page with a simple tribute: “The love of my life! Xxxx.”

It is understood the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund, set up to assist families whose loved ones have died abroad is involved in helping the Haughey family bring their son home.

The Western Australian has said that “a 28-year-old man is dead after a single-vehicle crash near Coolgardie yesterday afternoon” November 22 their time.

He had lived in Kalgoorlie and was a passenger in a blue Toyota Landcruiser wagon travelling on unsealed road surface south-west on Callian-Ora Banda Road around 3pm.

However the newspaper Western Australian stated:

The rear passenger, the 28 year old man was thrown from the vehicle and suffered life threatening injuries. He died at the scene.

The front seat passenger, a 24 year old Kalgoorlie man suffered minor injuries.
