Extension for successful ‘Midnight Soccer’ project

LIMAVADY Policing and Community Safety Partnership - working in partnership with Limavady Borough Council’s Sports Development Team – are extending the Midnight Soccer project following a successful 12 week block.

The project was due to finish on Friday past, but will continue for a further eight weeks, due to high participation levels.

The PCSP midnight soccer scheme targets young people (aged 12 to 17) on Friday evenings as part of a fitness and health and wellbeing diversion plan.

Limavady PCSP chair Alan Robinson said: “PCSP is delighted to continue to fund this scheme and to offer diversionary activities to local teenagers.”

“We are regularly getting around 100 young people on a Friday night and the interest is there to see this continue for another eight weeks.”

The project is an evolution of previous midnight soccer schemes, which were delivered by Council’s Sports Development Team.

Mr Ollie Mullan, Sports Development officer, said: “This is an exciting initiative that we know from previous schemes, delivers positive results.

“It offers valuable opportunities to undertake coaching and sports development accredited programmes, as well as improve fitness levels. We are hoping to work towards getting young people accredited in the next eight weeks.

“The project is open to everyone between the ages of 12 and 17 and we have the staff on site to facilitate more young people. All you have to do is come to Roe Valley Leisure Centre at 10.30pm and fill out a simple registration form. If you don’t have a team, we’ll put you in one.”
