“This was good opportunity to meet with the local Police Commander and to discuss matters of concern that many people have and also to hear from him some of the ways in which the PSNI locally are trying to tackle them.

“For example here in Craigavon there have been numerous drug seizures in recent months – a total of 531 between April 2008 and March 2010 with an accompanying 200 arrests in the same period.

“There are also ongoing concerns about dissident terrorist activity and sporadic outbreaks of civil disorder and what often appears to be recreational rioting where young people are being manipulated by more sinister elements.

“We welcomed the opportunity to get an update from the District Commander on how the PSNI are tackling these and other crime concerns in the area.”

They added: “We would take this opportunity to again make the public call to everyone to get fully behind the police service. They need public support and assistance to help them make us safer.”
