Cyclist killed in weekend crash

The 48 year old cyclist has been named as Donal Lucey from Clonkeen in County Kerry.

He was involved in a collision with a car on the Old Ballynahinch Road and part of the road was closed following the accident.

Police investigating the collision are appealing for witnesses to contact them. They can be reached at Lisburn police station on 0845 600 8000.

Lisburn Councillor James Baird said something must be done to make rural roads safer.

“How many more fatal and serious accidents need to happen before Roads service recognise the Old Ballynahinch Road and Magheraknock Roads are as dangerous as they are?” asked Mr Baird.

He called on the Roads Service to act to improve safety on the road. “This is the main arterial route from South Down to Lisburn and beyond,” he said. “As agreed with local PSNI officers, a combination of actions would help towards making the road safer.

“These should start with he introduction of a 40mph speed limit along the Bailliesmill, Masonic Hall and Cargycreevy Presbyterian Church Hall stretch of this road, along with more signs highlighting that these roads are accident black spots,

“There also needs to be rumble strips to remind drivers of the speed limits and more signs to highlight bends and blind crests on the road,” he added.
