Trader sold falsely described high performance car

A CAR dealer from Londonderry who sold a ‘clocked’ car falsely described as a Mitsubishi Evo 8 to a consumer in Castlederg was today given a 200-hour Community Service Order at Strabane Magistrates’ Court.

In a case brought by the Trading Standards Service of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, William Vance (Junior), of Nelson Drive, Londonderry, pleaded guilty to three charges under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008.

The court also imposed a compensation order of £750.

The case was the result of a consumer complaint to the Trading Standards Service. It was alleged that a car sold by Mr. Vance Junior had been falsely described as a Mitsubishi Evo 8, when it was not.

The Trading Standards Service investigation discovered that the car did not have a Mitsubishi Evo 8 engine, had travelled at least 27,000 miles more than was indicated on its odometer and had previously sustained significant damage.

Catherine McErlean of the Trading Standards Service said: “Car traders are obliged by law to establish the true history of a vehicle prior to its selling. Falsely describing vehicles on internet sites is prevalent in the North West and the Trading Standards Service monitors and investigates this type of trading on an ongoing basis.”
