‘Cowardly threats left most vulnerable isolated’

DUP Alderman Gary Middleton says the most vulnerable members of our society were left lonely and isolated as a result of cowardly threats levelled by the IRA against local community safety wardens last week.

The threat was lifted over the weekend following a series of protests by Council workers, local politicians and members of the public.

Mr Middleton, the Group Leader of the local DUP, welcomed the fact the threats have now been lifted.

“Whilst I welcome the threats being lifted, they should never have been made in the first place. No cause will be furthered by violence or terrorism. This was proven over the past 40 years,” he said.

“The DUP in Londonderry have had a great working relationship with our local community wardens over the years. They are there to serve and support the community along with other statutory agencies.

“The cowardly threats which were made against the wardens and those who work with the PSNI caused much stress and worry among our communities.

“The most vulnerable in our society were left feeling alone and those who had a job to do were unable to fulfil their duties,” he added.

The DUP Alderman said the people who levelled the threats could not ignore the resounding protests from members of the communities the safety wardens serve.

“I call on those who made these threats to listen to the communities. They are not wanted and there is no place for their actions in our society,” he said.
