The five-year-old passed away at the Children’s Hospice last week after a courageous battle against neuroblastoma - an aggressive form of cancer.

At their monthly meeting on Monday night, members of the council’s Leisure Committee expressed their sadness at Wee Oscar’s death and agreed that his parents, Stephen and Leona, should be offered the opportunity to plant a memorial tree in Lilian Bland Community Park in memory of their son.

The meeting heard Oscar described as “a boy who was loved by many” and “a great wee guy with a great personality”.

Members agreed that the Mayor should write to the Knox family expressing the council’s condolences.

The local authority is considering turning a section of the community garden in the Glengormley park into a memorial garden to allow other families who’ve lost children to plant trees in their memory.
