Conman uses new scam to target elderly victim

AN ELDERLY woman in Warren Gardens has had her handbag stolen after a man called to her house claiming that he needed to get in to retrieve a ball.

The incident happened on Sunday, 26th May, at around 6.30pm when a man called to her house claiming his child had kicked a ball into her back garden.

She closed her door and watched the man from her back door as he went into her back garden but he left claiming he couldn’t find the ball.

After he was gone the woman noticed her handbag was missing.

Police are asking anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious in the area or who has any information to contact CID in Lisburn on 0845 600 8000 or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Police are reminding residents to exercise caution when dealing with unexpected callers.

It is worth remembering that bogus callers will use all sorts of tactics to gain access to a victim’s home. Genuine callers will not mind being challenged about the authenticity of their identity.

If someone unexpected calls to your door ensure your back door is locked and use a spy hole and a chain where possible and ask for ID if they claim to be from a company - you can contact QuickCheck on 0800 013 22 90. If you are not convinced of the identity of the caller, don’t let them in. Ask the caller to come back later and arrange for a friend, relative or neighbour to be present on their return.
