Commemorating the ‘Great War’

“On this very day one hundred years ago Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, and his wife, were shot dead during a visit to Sarajevo. The killings sparked a chain of events that led to the outbreak of World War I,” an association spokesman said.

To mark 100 years since the start of WW1 the Ancre Somme Association have decided that ‘it is only right and proper’ that they hold a parade and march in memory of all those who proudly marched off to war and in particular those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and were never to return.

All participants to assemble in Johnston’s Row, Lurgan at 6pm as the parade will begin at 6.30pm.

The route is as follows: Johntons Row, High Street, Market Street, Church Place, Market Street, High Street, Queens Street, Avenue Road, Monroe Avenue, Wheatfield Drive, Ashleigh Crescent, Carrick Drive, Banbridge Road, Gilford Road, Pollock Drive, Tandragee Road and Union Street.

All groups, organisation and bands participating in this commemoration parade will be encouraged to lay a wreath at Lurgan War Memorial. A single wreath will also be laid at the mural in the Avenue Road, at 
the plaque to Harry Fairley, at the mural in Mourneview and finally at the plaque to Pte William McFadzean.

Various groups will join the parade in period dress those attending are encouraged to do likewise. In particular they would encourage participants to dress in period 36th 
(Ulster) Division, YCV and UVF Nursing Corps 
costumes.

To further mark this Anniversary the Ancre Somme Association has produced a commemorative medal dedicated to Lurgan born, William “Billy” McFadzean VC. These medals are in a presentation box and can be purchased from any member of the Association or via their website www.ancresommeassociation.co.uk priced at £15.

The Ancre Somme Association is honoured to have as their Special Guest at this parade our esteemed honorary member Ranger Andy Allen.

A collection will take place during this parade with all donations going to Andy’s charity, AA Veterans Support.

As the parade concludes the Ancre Somme Association will be holding a dance in Lurgan Royal British Legion. Doors open at 8pm and the entrance fee will be £5 to the public and £3 to band members.
