Clanmil pushing ahead with new housing development on disused supermarket site in Glengormley

The housing association is planning to construct 56 new family homes - 21 houses and 35 apartments - on the former Tesco supermarket site at Carnmoney Road.

On Wednesday, June 1 Clanmil held a public information session at Glengormley Pavilion to give local people a chance to have their say on the proposed redevelopment of the disused supermarket site.

More than 100 people attended the event, including a number of community and elected representatives, who shared their views with Clanmil in relation to its plans.

Speaking afterwards, Jan Sloan, Development Manager at Clanmil said: “Clanmil is committed to delivering homes that are safe and welcoming to all and we are always keen to hear the views of all those who have an interest in the design and management of housing schemes that we propose to develop in their area.

“We very much appreciate so many people taking time to come along to our information event to find out more about our plans for the former Tesco site in Glengormley and tell us what they think. We are really encouraged by their feedback in relation to the design of the new homes and the layout of the scheme.”

An application for planning permission is expected to be submitted to Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council in July 2016.

Subject to planning approval, Clanmil is hopeful that construction of the new homes will begin by spring 2017.

“Clanmil will continue to keep local community and elected representatives updated as the scheme progresses,” a spokesperson for the housing association added.

Speaking after the meeting, North Belfast MP Nigel Dodds commented: “I am absolutely delighted with the progress being made. The residents of Glengormley have waited over 50 years for the development of new general needs housing, a record that is now thankfully coming to an end.

“The plans Clanmil presented are very exciting, particularly for the areas of Queens Park and Glenvarna where housing waiting lists continue to soar. This large development will go some way to meeting that need.”

The DUP man added: “My party and I have raised some concerns about the proposed mix of the development and have called for the inclusion of more family homes to ensure the creation of a settled community that is an attractive place to live and raise a family.

“We will continue to work with Clanmil and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive to ensure this development meets the needs of the local community.”
