City disrupted by high winds and aftermath

THE clean-up operation following the high winds in Londonderry is underway resulting in some of Council’s facilities being affected.

A spokesperson for the Council said efforts were being made to clean up fallen debris and restore services as soon as possible.

Lisnagelvin Leisure Centre was closed on Tuesday until further notice following the loss of some roof panels due to the high winds.

The damage to the roof was being assessed yesterday and it was hoped to have the facility up and running again as soon as possible.

All refuse collections operated as normal – the only weather related issue was at Darleen Park on the Culmore Road after a fallen tree prevented the refuse collectors accessing the area. Arrangements were being made to have the collection carried out yesterday.

A number of trees fell in Council parks and on cycle paths across the city. It was anticipated that Brooke Park would remain closed on Tuesday as efforts continued to clear debris strewn throughout the area.

The cycle path at Prehen also remained closed yesterday due to fallen trees and the impending clear up operation. Selected paths throughout St Columb’s Path were open to the public. Other paths remained closed to facilitate the clearing of fallen tree. The public were yesterday asked to be vigilant to take care when out walking in parks and open spaces.

Meanwhile, members of the public were also advised that the City and Altnagelvin cemeteries had reopened to the public
