Carrick events usher in the ‘Year of the Sheep’

That was the message from the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Lynn McClurg, as Carrickfergus welcomed in the Chinese New Year with programmes at a number of locations.

Downshire School celebrated with its first ever Chinese Taster Day. Year 8 pupils had the opportunity to experience Chinese language and culture. Sessions included Tai Chi, cooking and tasting demonstrations, calligraphy and paper cutting.

“It was a great afternoon which was enjoyed by pupils and teachers alike,” said a Downshire spokesperson.

Meanwhile, Carrickfergus Council teamed up with Artsekta to usher in the ‘Year of the Sheep’ at the Town Hall.

In her address at the Antrim Street venue, Councillor McClurg added: “With its rich meaning and special charisma, and with the efforts of the Chinese people around the world, the New Year festival is crossing the boundary of China, connecting the world, and becoming a world festival that is enjoyed by people of different nationalities, including everyone here today.”

“The Chinese New Year has become a brand and symbol of Chinese culture. We hope that more and more people may share the joy brought about by the Festival, appreciate its culture, learn more and know more about China through it, and promote friendship.

“Through events like today, we aim to help promote respect and understanding and provide opportunities for learning and experiencing different cultures. Happy New Year! Kung Hei Fat Choy!”
