Cancer charity to benefit from year of fundraising at Carrickfergus College

The event on Thursday evening saw pupils and families join members of staff and the board of governors at the North Road school.

Addressing those present, headmaster Hedley Webb stressed the importance of hard work and motivation - both qualities strongly espoused by former principal Derek Campbell.

Mr Campbell passed away last year after a long illness and he is “sorely missed” by the school community, Mr Webb said.

“The foundation he laid as principal are what the school is now building on and the legacy he left behind cannot be underestimated,” he added.

In honour of Mr Campbell, the school will be raising money this year for cancer charity Myeloma UK.

Meanwhile, special guest at the evening was Andy Allen, a veteran and founder of the charity AA Veterans Support.

In July 2008, Andy was horrifically injured by an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) while in Afghanistan.

During his recovery, Andy witnessed first-hand the need to improve support services for those who currently serve and have served, as well as their families, throughout Northern Ireland.

Andy engaged the assembled guests with an inspirational account of his story, focusing on his reaction to the life-changing event that happened to him.

Following the prize-giving, the night was rounded off with supper and a photo booth manned by art teacher
