Bridge footfall tops 550,000

Ilex, the urban regeneration company today announced that the total pedestrian and cycle movement on the Peace Bridge has now reached 550,000 since its launch on June 25 last year.

Matt McNulty, Acting Chairman of Ilex said: “This is great news for the city and shows just how popular the Peace Bridge has become. Since the opening of Ebrington Square in February even greater numbers have crossed the bridge and our programme of events at Ebrington over the coming months will boost usage even more. The Peace Bridge is not just loved by the people of Derry ~ Londonderry, it has already become a tourist attraction in its own right. No trip to the city is complete without a walk or cycle on it”.

Caoimhin Corrigan, Ilex’s Cultural Broke, said: “This Friday, Saturday and Sunday will see the city’s first ever Cookery School Live hosted at Ebrington Square, with three days of fun-filled Master Chef style events, featuring a number of leading celebrity chefs, live ‘cook off’s and professional cooking at its best. This is just one of a number of events scheduled for Ebrington Square, the next being the ‘Get Lost’ Maze at the end of this month”.

The busiest day of the week is Sunday, followed closely by Saturday and the peak time is around 3pm

Pedestrian movements were recorded using a number of methods, including hand held counters during the Peace Bridge opening weekend, random sample counts over five minute periods and counts from a static multi-directional digital counter which records the number of movements east and west.
