Brains and brawn for Macmillan

WHITEABBEY bar, Bureau by the Lough is holding a series of fundraisers for the Macmillan Cancer Support Unit at Antrim Area Hospital.

This Sunday (August 26) bar owner Damien Curren is taking part in the ‘Lap of the Lough’ - a challenging 130km cycle around Lough Neagh with thousands of other cyclists.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, August 30, there will be a fundraising pub quiz starting at 9pm.

The bar is donating a bumper £200 worth of prizes, with rewards for first and second place as well as spot prizes and a grand raffle draw.

Entry fee is a minimum donation to Macmillan of £3 per person.

Damien hopes to raise at least £1,000 from his mammoth cycling effort and has urged local people to make a donation.

He said: “The Macmillan Unit at Antrim Area Hospital provides an invaluable service to this community, and has helped many of our own customers and friends.

“Cycling 130km will be fairly gruelling and fitting training in around running a bar and restaurant has been tricky.

“I’m no Bradley Wiggins but I’ll be aiming to complete it in about 4.5 hours. Customers have been so generous and I’m well on my way to raising at least £1,000.”

He added: “The pub quiz is a chance for everyone to do something for Macmillan without breaking such a sweat.

“All you have to do is round up some team mates, brush up on your general knowledge and be here for 9pm.

“You’ll have great fun, maybe win some great prizes and help a truly worthwhile cause. If everyone gives at least £3, we could make a really meaningful contribution to Macmillan.”

Bureau By The Lough is dedicating its fundraising activities in memory of the late Professor Eric Saunders OBE, a personal friend and respected customer, who was cared for at the Macmillan Unit.
