Borough Chamber disappointed with rates rise

COLERAINE Borough Chamber of Commerce has expressed its disappointment that rates are to rise by almost 5% in the borough.

The Chamber had been calling on Council to consider a freeze on rates increases.

A spokesperson for the Chamber said: “We were particularly keen that Council would make internal spending cuts and introduce efficiency programmes so that this could be achieved without adversely affecting essential community programmes.

“Against this backdrop we are very disappointed that Council has decided on an increase in the district rate of 4.98%. However we are relieved, and gratified, that the increase has been held to a level which is significantly below earlier estimates.

“We are indebted to a number of members of Chamber Council who have expended substantial amounts of time and energy, all in an entirely voluntary capacity, in leading the rates campaign on behalf of our members, many of whom are hurting badly in the continuing economic downturn.”
