Barnardo's launches '˜Sweet Syrie' rose to mark its 150th year

The climbing rose honours the work of the funder of Dr Barnardo’s wife Syrie Barnardo, in the charity’s 150th anniversary year.

Dr Thomas Barnardo was originally from Dublin but founded the largest and oldest children’s charity in 1866 when he saw the poverty some children were living in the East End of London.

Syrie worked alongside Thomas Barnardo, helping London’s destitute children and continued to support the charity after her husband died.

Syrie played a crucial role making sure the charity cared for girls as well as boys.

Director Barnardo’s NI Lynda Wilson said: “This beautiful, strong rose is a fitting tribute to Syrie’s tireless work helping children off the streets of London. Calling the rose ‘Sweet Syrie’ is meaningful as Syrie means ‘to bring love and a new start in life’. The rose has long-lasting flowers and a gorgeous perfume. Every ‘Sweet Syrie’ bought will help us raise money to ensure we are there for children now and always.”
