Anti social behaviour keeping children out of play park

Things have got so bad that residents in the area met representatives from Lisburn City Council's Environmental Services Department recently to discuss the local park.

One mother of two small children said: "Things are getting bad in the park and I just won't go there any more. The anti-social behaviour is awful and I'm just so grateful that the Council have stepped in to help deal with the issue. I really hope something can be done soon."

Councillor James Tinsley, Chairman of the Council's Environmental Services Committee, said the meeting was a chance to hear first hand the concerns of local residents.

"Things are so bad the residents have requested that the park is locked in the evening" he said.

Local representatives for the Ballymacash area and Chairman of the Council's Corporate Services Committee, Councillor William Leathem, were also present at the meeting.

Mr Leathem said: "Anti-social behaviour is a concern across all Council areas and the fact that Lisburn City Council is dedicated to working with local residents to reduce such behaviour is a positive.

"I would also like to ask that parents throughout the Lisburn area know where their children are at all times and what they are doing. This will assist the Council and the PSNI to reduce anti-social behaviour."

Mr Tinsley added: "The Islandkelly residents also requested that some remedial works be completed in the park.

"Parks are created for the enjoyment of everyone and the Council has agreed to look at incorporating the proposed works within its parks maintenance programme and will work with the local community to secure the park in the evening."

A spokesperson for the Council added; "The Council is keen to meet with any group of residents to discuss any concerns or issues that they may have.

"This meeting with the residents of Islandkelly Park is just one example of such meetings that take place between residents, Councillors and Council Officers.
