Another theft at Newbuildings

DUP Alderman Gary Middleton has, once again, called for vigilance, after £800 worth of insulating material was stolen from premises at Newbuildings at the weekend.

It is the latest in a spate of thefts which has plagued the village in recent months.

Following a visit to the site at which the theft took place, Mr Middleton said he had met with the owner who had spoken of the restricted financial circumstances facing businesses.

“This theft occurred at a new development at the Care Home at the Old Mill. This is just a structure at the moment, and, while there was insulation sheeting outside, this development was very well secured and the perimeter fencing was not see-through, so someone obviously had to get onsite to know about this sheeting and steal it.

“The message the DUP want to stress is that some people will stop at nothing and stoop to any level to steal is things are left lying out,” he said, adding: “Having visited the site it appears that those who carried out the theft used a trailer to transport the sheting away having lobbed it over the perimeter fence.”

Mr Middleton added: “I am appealing for residents to increase their vigilance and report any suspicious activity to police, and I am calling on the police to maintain a high-visibility presence in the Newbuildings area. The economic factors at work locally mean that budgets are tight for all businesses and anything that can be done to protect business people should be done.”

Meanwhile the police confirmed that they were appealing for information following an incident of theft in the Victoria Road area of Londonderry overnight Friday, January 27.
