American trio's exhibition celebrates 'Sibling Revelry'

THE art and photography of a trio of American artists will be featured in an exhibition in Pilots' Row and the Eden Place Art Centre from tomorrow Thursday, February 18.

The three Americans also happen to be siblings and living proof that it’s not too late to do what you love. The idea for a joint show came about when they were discussing the late onset of their respective artistic careers and their acknowledgement that instead of there being any sibling rivalry between them, they were enjoying sibling ‘revelry.’

Two years ago, Mary Kennedy moved from Oklahoma, USA, to Londonderry to marry a local man. It was also the first chance in 25 years that she had the time to focus on her art and sewing.

Raising her children balanced with career responsibilities had been her main focus. But she kept her hand in artistic pursuits during those years and since moving to the North West she has learned to quilt and feels that it is a great way to utilise her many years of sewing experience along with creativity.

Patrick Bowman is from Chickasha, Oklahoma. He too left a lot of his artistic endeavours behind while pursuing various careers as an oil field worker, a stuntman, newspaper editor and landscape designer.

Back injuries forced him into an early retirement, but that also gave him time to return to illustrating and writing. It was at this time that he also discovered a talent and love for photography.

He only started seriously learning about photography in the last year but has quickly gained a reputation locally for his abilities.

Peggy Sircy also lives in Chickasha, Oklahoma. She is the mother of four grown sons and had given up art to a great extent during their formative years.

Six years ago she decided to delve back into art taking a class at university. She quickly proved adept at acrylics, oils, water colour, coloured pencil, pottery, and sculpting. She has won numerous awards in art competitions in Oklahoma, Missouri, New Mexico and Texas. Her work has been featured in newspapers, art reviews and television documentaries and she has served as juror for a number of art competitions. The main themes of her paintings are animals which she generally renders in the photorealist style.

The opening for ‘Sibling Revelry’ will take place on Thursday 18 February 7.30 p.m. at Eden Place Arts Centre, in Rossville Street.
