Advice on animal welfare

Carrickfergus Borough Council has been issued with advice over the welfare of horses and other equines in the borough.

In a letter from the Animal Welfare Project, members were informed that officers had received a number of complaints regarding the welfare of animals which were found to be grazing on individual councils’ properties.

“It is advised that if a council has a lease agreement with a member of the public to graze their non-farmed animals on council property, the property should be adequately fenced and maintained,” the letter read.

The local authority was also advised to seek assistance from an animal welfare officer if any non-farmed animals were going to be present at any council-run or council-sponsored events.
