90mph speedadmission

AN 18-YEAR-old man who admitted travelling at a speed of 90 miles per hour on the Northway, has been fined £200 at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

Gerard Bates, of Gilpinstown Road, Lurgan, also had five penalty points imposed at Friday’s court, when he admitted driving carelessly on October 11 last.

He was also fined 50 for exceeding the speed limit.

A prosecuting lawyer said police followed a car driven by Bates on Northway, towards Portadown. She said police were doing 100 miles per hour as they followed the defendant.

She said when police stopped the defendant, he admitted doing 90 miles per hour – the speed limit on the motorway is 70.

Defending solicitor Mr Phelim Rafferty, said there had been an element of “youthful bravado” on the part of Bates, and he said the incident had been a salutary lesson for him.
