‘11 drivers abuse one-way system every single day’

DUP Councillor Alan Robinson has previously called for drivers to show more respect for the rules of the road at Massey Avenue in Limavady although he believes his pleas for greater consideration have had little impact.

He said: “During the summer I had accompanied a delegation of Massey Avenue and Annadale residents to a meeting with the Police to discuss a series of issues.

“Amongst the topics covered was the abuse of the one way system whereby a number of drivers are driving up Protestant Street but rather than following the system through William Street they are driving up Massey Avenue against the flow of traffic and therefore contravening the no entry signage.

“Following the discussions with police I had followed up with Roads Service asking that they install a short term traffic assessment counter in order to verify the residents’ concerns.

“This week we received the results from the traffic assessment which showed that on average 11 drivers per day are driving against the flow of traffic. These results clearly vindicate the residents who have been asking police to clamp down on such activity.

“Obviously highlighting the problem previously in the press has had no impact where those involved are also putting at risk the lives of local residents whose natural instinct when crossing the road is to look in the direction of the legal flow of traffic. Roads Service have forwarded this evidence to Police and I trust that efforts will made to apprehend and to send out a signal that this behaviour is not only illegal but is a brazen disregard to the wishes and the welfare of the local residents.”
