Colin’s Cambodia trek raises £5k for charity

BALLYNURE man Colin Ferguson has just returned from the other side of the world after completing a mammoth trek in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care Northern Ireland.

Colin, who raised more than £5,100 for the charity, was part of a team of more than 30 fundraisers from across the province who participated in Trek Cambodia - travelling up to 25kms daily for five days, from Siem Reap to Angkor Wat.

“Whilst extensive training had taken place beforehand around the Ballyclare area and the Mournes, nothing could really prepare you for the treks through the jungle, up mountains and at times waist deep in water crossing rivers, all in almost 40 degrees,” Colin explained.

“It was also great to meet so many local people in villages along the route, and in particular children.

“It was amazing how something simple like a Frisbee costing 50 pence could bring so much fun and enjoyment to so many kids in a village street.”

Overall to date the trekkers have raised in excess of £125,000 for Marie Curie Northern Ireland.

The charity’s next big trek adventure will take place in Borneo in 2014.
