Time to crack Codes

DUBLIN rising stars Codes will play The Limelight on Wednesday night.

Support comes from Southampton's favourite sons Delays.

Codes have never been ones to be content with trend-following. The group have taken the recognisable four-piece band formula and moved it into something entirely their own. Soaring vocal harmonies, dreamy arrangements and a calculated cryptography of electronic beats, piano, glockenspiel and analogue synthesizers permeate their sound.

Ahead of Wednesday's Limelight show frontman Daragh Anderson told the 'MAIL': "Belfast is brilliant. We've played there three times. We're always well looked after and the crowds are great.

"In Dublin the gigs can tend to be a bit rushed, playing maybe two or three shows in one day. In Belfast we get to concentrate on one show."

Daragh discussed the differences between English and Irish crowds: "In Ireland people take the time to stand back and decide if they like the band. They might take a couple of songs to join in. In England they start off right up at the front and if they don't like the band they'll drift away. I'd rather win people over."

The band got together in May 2007 by the end of 2008 they had an entire catalogue of songs to choose from for their debut album.

Codes released 'Trees Dream In Algebra' last September. It was recorded in Gloucestershire with Manic Street Preachers and Super Furry Animals producer Greg Haver.

The record received good reviews and appeared in several end of year polls of Top Irish albums.

"We pulled together all our money from our day jobs to do the album. The record was done in our own time and our own budget. We got together with Gerg (Haver) through Myspace. We really admired the Lifeblood album he did with the Manics."

He continued: "We'd gone for broke to get the album done, but we hadn't planned further than that.

"Then EMI came along. They really appreciated the time and work going into the album."

Daragh added: "The critical reaction has been really, really positive. It wasn't something we expected at all.

"To be nominated for the Choice prize was a huge milestone. I've followed the Choice award for a long time even before I was in a band. I've a lot of respect for that particular award."
