The female aviator came to world attention as the first women in history to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and to celebrate the Amelia Earhart Friendship Society, in partnership with Greater Shantallow Community Arts and the Earhart Festival, is hosting a photographic launch and exhibition at the site of the former Northern Counties Hotel, Waterloo Place. It was here that Amelia appeared to local people and famously sent a telegram from the General Post Office next door to the world announcing her historical achievement.

Eilish Quigley of the Amelia Earhart Friendship Society said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with GSCA and the Earhart Festival to keep alive and bring new understanding and appreciation of the significant role that Amelia Earhart played as an inspiration for women.”

Oliver Green, Earhart Festival Co-ordinator, said: “Keeping alive our cities connectivity to this historical event has been at the core of what the Earhart Festival has been about since its formation and we are delighted to have been working alongside the Amelia Earhart friendship society in hosting the exhibition. We are also honoured that we will be joined by local writer and historian Felicity McCall and artist Joe Campbell who will be signing copies of their new publication, ‘Amelia Earhart First Lady of Aviation’. Guests at the launch will be enthralled by the wonderful musical composition by renowned Derry songwriter Dougie Breslin entitled ‘Amelia’ which will be performed by Emma Breslin”.

The event at the Northern Counties building will begin at 10am and the Mayor Martin Reilly will be guest of honour.
