Wilson on the podium yet again

Local racing driver Wilson Thompson claimed second place on the podium for two races at Mondello Park recently, despite mechanical problems troubling the local young driver.

Wilson, who has been on the podium for every race this season, was racing at the Mondello Park race circuit, just outside Naas, on Saturday July 12.

He was delighted to get himself onto pole position in very damp and tricky conditions for both races later in the day.

Wilson led both races from the start but his engine seemed to be down on power and was only able to manage second place for both races, which was a good result but which left the young driver rueing what could have been.

Testing has been planned before the next race to see if his team can find the problem and hopefully he can get back on the top step of the podium again for the next races at Mondello Park on his 16th birthday on August 10.

In just his first year of racing, Wilson is good shape to claim the 2014 Ginetta Junior Ireland championship title as a rookie, the first time someone would have achieved the feat, however he still has a lot of work ahead of him if he is to achieve that dream.

Wilson has proven to be a natural and hopes to continue racing, and his father Robert says he has his sights set on British circuits, perhaps competing in the Renault Clio Cup or the Ginetta Junior UK championship next year.

Robert said: “Wilson is something special, he has a gift, I hope he can make the most of it.”
