Whites close to survival with win

LISBURN Distillery's hopes of retaining their Premiership status received another huge boost this afternoon as they moved five points clear of near rivals Institute when they beat lacklustre Glenavon 3-1 at Mourneview Park.

Tommy Wright's side look likely to now complete their 'Great Escape' from what looked like certain relegation, holding not only a five point advantage thanks to today's win and 'Stute's 3-0 defeat at Ballymena, but they also have a game in hand.

Gary Thompson headed Distillery ahead on nine minutes and Neal Gawley doubled the lead before half-time.

Ryan Harpur pulled a goal back for the home side on 53 minutes as Glenavon improved but Austin Friel's goal on 73 minutes made the game safe for the Whites.

Thompson headed Distillery's opener after connecting with an Andy Kilmartin cross.

As the Whites dominated the match, Gawley hit the woodwork and both he and Glenn Ferguson went close to doubling Distillery's advantage.

The Whites deservedly went 2-0 ahead when Gawley fired home after Ferguson had flicked on a Peter McCann cross.

Glenavon did improve after the break and they got their reward when Harpur pulled a goal back on 53 minutes.

However, the points were secured for the Whites when Friel hammered home on 73 minutes to take a vital and deserved victory for the Whites.
