Tim gets top vote

The Draynes Farms 'Lisburn Sports Personality Awards 2010' took place on Friday, October 29 at Lagan Valley Island, Lisburn celebrating the sporting achievements of many top athletes from across the City.

Organised by Sport Lisburn this gala evening was hosted by Adrian Logan and Kyle McCallan, Irish International Cricketer was guest speaker.

Tim Cockram from Lisnagarvey Hockey Club's was crowned 'Sports Personality of the Year', after a brilliant season, having scored 45 goals for his club and earning his 100th Irish Cap. Bethany Carson, Commonwealth Games' Swimmer came second followed by Sinad Chambers, Irish and Ulster Champion Badminton player in third place.

The 'Junior Sports Personality of the Year' award went to golfer Paula Grant, with her sister, Laura, coming a close second. Alannah Stephenson, Ulster and Irish Badminton champion in was third.

Lisnagarvey 2nd XI were the winners of the 'Team of the Year', after their unbeaten season, with Alpha's Senior Badminton team in second place and Larkfield Netball Club in third place, after another successful season.

The 'Junior Club Team of the Year' award was a tightly contested category making a decision

difficult for the judges. After much deliberation, Lisburn Rugby Club U11's came first, Lisburn

City Swimming Club's Boys' Relay team second and Crewe United Youth Team third.

Friends School had a clean sweep in the 'Schools' category. Its Junior Girls Badminton team was first, its Minor Boys Badminton team second and its Ski team was a commendable third.

Joy Guthrie from Lisburn City Basketball Club was a very worthy recipient of the 'Merit Award', which recognises the work behind the scenes that generally goes unnoticed, but is vital to the success of any sports club.

'The Coach of the Year' award went to Alpha Badminton Club's Trevor Woods. Alpha Badminton was also joint winner of the 'Club of the Year' award with Dromara Cycling Club.

Councillor David Archer, Chairman of Lisburn City Council's Leisure Services Committee, which funds Sport Lisburn, presented special awards on the evening to Mark Montgomery and David McCann, for their respective achievements in the Commonwealth Games.

David won a bronze medal in the Team Pursuit Cycling, while Mark was fifth in both Wresting disciplines and carried the flag for the Northern Ireland team.

Over 200 people attended the very successful Lisburn Sports Personality Awards 2010.

Sponsor Michael Drayne, Draynes Farms and organiser Gerry O'Neill, Sport Lisburn, were delighted with the 'full house' and congratulated everyone on their sporting success over the past year.
