South come out tops in a must win clash against Bangor

Bangor 1 South Antrim 3

Saturday saw South Antrim travel to Bangor to face off against each other. South sit one place above Bangor in the table so this was a must win clash.

The game started as a cagey affair with both sides more concerned with keeping the ball than attacking the circle.

A chance came went Jonny Patterson robbed Bangor of possession was hit a ball to the back post, an outstretched stick from Maguire at the flick spot deflected the ball just out of reach of Gamble at the back post. South’s full press was to be their undoing as an aerial ball in the corner went beyond the defence and a rash challenge from behind just inside the last quarter resulted in a short corner, which was duly dispatched with a low drag flick.

Keeping their shape and discipline South kept the ball well and won their first short corner after some trickery from Phillips. The Lisburner’s tried a drag flick only to cleared of the line by a Bangor defender. Shortly after Gamble used his pace to break around the back of the Bangor defence from the left wing and found a foot to win a second short. This time a dummy drag back to the injector found the net with a deflection from captain Lee Marshall.

The second half started much the same as the first, with both teams sizing each other up and playing keep ball. A quick free from Marshall across field to Glass at right back, opened space up for a diagonal ball to the top of the D, where an unmarked Ward Phillips, received the ball with enough time to pick his spot and dispatch his shot into the bottom corner, 2-1.

South got their reward for tireless pressing when Semple stole possession and played in Maguire who made no mistake, rounding the keeper and slotted the ball home.
