Jog Lisburn is driving this Public Health Agency initiative within the Lisburn City Council area.

It is a free and easy way of getting fitter and healthier.

Alderman Paul Porter, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure Services Committee, speaking at the launch, said: “This 10-week programme has been designed to assist local residents who wish to increase their physical activity level and the New Year is the ideal time for a new challenge.

“Research has proved that physical activity helps to maintain a healthy weight and can reduce the risk of diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, heart disease and breast cancer.

“I am delighted that RAMS has attended tonight to weigh each participant at the start of the programme and will return in week 10.

“The Council through its Sports Development Unit is supportive of this initiative as the health and well-being of our residents is of importance to us.

“In addition to the physical benefits, exercise is good for your mental health and can improve your mood, confidence, protect against depression and reduce anxiety.

“Throughout the year the Council runs a number of physical activities such as the Half Marathon and the Triathlon; and it is great to see other events run in the City,” he concluded.

The ‘Couch to 5K’ programme is suitably structured to allow absolute beginners to get into running.

Each session includes periods of walk and easy jogging throughout the one-hour session.

Jog Lisburn ensures that those who are participating will gradually build up their fitness and stamina.

It wishes to see each person complete the programme and achieve personal benefits in terms of increase in physical fitness levels and weight loss.
