With Ballinderry players withdrawing from the Lisburn Zone team the new boys won by 12 shots against Mid Tyrone in the Inter Zone Plate competition at Eglantine on Saturday.
The reasons behind the withdrawals by Ballinderry are, at present, unknown to me and I am not in a position to judge, but suffice to say that the reasons for opting out must have been extremely serious in the view of the Ballinderry bowlers.
Possibly when I am told both sides of the story I can have an opinion on which actions were correct. People on both sides of the argument are welcome to contact me at any time.
As it turned out the team, which included three new caps, Gabriel Brankin, Glen Harvey and Victor McCarthy, did the business on this occasion, but surely a compromise must be reached for no team can leave out some their top players. Having said that the Zone selectors had to go down the route taken for Saturday.
Gary McWilliams, David Verner, Jim Johnston and Michael Beattie lost 5-8 to A. Cunningham after trailing 2-5 at the fifth and 2-8 at eight ends.
Stevie Mulholland, Glen Scales, John Mackey and Chris Connolly were 5-3 ahead at the fifth but 6-7 at the eighth before winning 8-7 against W. Boggs.
David Lee, Jim Harvey, Gabriel Brankin and Glen Harvey played N. Rutledge and were 4-5 down at the fifth, but 8-8 three ends later and won 14-8 to leave Lisburn 27-23 up at the interval.
Victor McCarthy, Paul Cairnduff, Andy Riley and Nick Haire were 6-3 ahead at the fifth against J. Conroy but it was 7-7 at the eight and Lisburn lost 7-10.
Stephen Irwin, Michael Fell, Roy Kennedy and Noel Graham played D. Spratt and came back from 3-5 down at the fifth to lead 7-5 at the eighth before winning 10-6.
Colwyn Elwood, Brian Kerr, Robert Sloan and Nathan Haire played C. Short, who only won two ends. Level 3-3 Lisburn were 8-3 up at the eighth and won 10-3.
Lisburn will field the same team for the next Plate game against Donegal at Eglantine Parish hall on Saturday, January 24, 2pm start.
The reserves have also been named for the match: D. Carser, Seymour Hill; P. Dennison, Annahilt Parish; M. McQuillan, Eglantine; J. Campbell, St Colman’s Dunmurry.
