The Final competition of the year at Lambeg was held on Saturday.
This final non-qualifying competition, sponsored by Hunter home Ventilation, was postponed earlier last month because of bad weather.
Playing off the yellow markers and with “lift clean and place through the green” the order of the day, high scores were expected and it was proven correct when new member Stephen Buchannon (28) won his first competition of the season with a fantastic 49 pts.
With his high handicap, it was all about scoring at every hole and he went round with not worse than a six on his card.
With a few pars added in, the points fairly accumulated and he returned with that unbeatable score.
What does Craig Tiffen (6) have to do to win a competition? Last week he finished 3rd after a brilliant performance and this week, runner-up with 47 points playing off 6. Craig completed his round with an amazing seven birdies, two single bogeys and nine pars, a deserved winner of the “Player of the Year.”
The ever steady Frank Murray was beaten into third in the count-back when he also scored 47 points, Frank’s round included 11 pars and a birdie but he lost out when he hit three single bogeys on the last four holes. John Oakes won best gross.
Other results, Raymond Rodgers won the Seniors Cup (over 50’s) and Past President Brian Bates won the Veterans Cup (over 65’s) “The Chipped Potato” Matchplay Championship.
Alan Crockard and Chris Boyd played out the final in a great match. By the time they reached the fifth hole they were “all Square” after winning a hole each but Alan won the next three holes to go three up after eight.
Chris did not lie down and fought back to take the next two. Alan won the 12th to restore a two hole lead but lost his concentration and lost the next three holes to go one down with three to play.
In a very tense finish the next two holes were halved but it was Chris who kept his cool and won the last hole by 2 holes and become Matchplay Champion 2015.
